The song is a true story written by Donna and her frequent co-writer Marc Rossi. The man in the song is a relative of Donna's husband Rick Stanley who lived in the Clinch Mountains and made some tough choices because of his faith. After he passed away, Donna felt compelled to tell his story and when she shared the lyric she had been working on and the story with Marc Rossi at their writing session, he immediately began playing the haunting melody and the song came to life. It was their goal to just tell the story and not stand in judgment of his choices in any way and it is a real tearjerker.
Levi Stone is the final track on Donna's 2009 CD release Walk This Mountain Down.
